Bismika Allahuma. Last Updated on February 18, T he word Tawhid comes from the verb wahhad which literally means to unite. Further, the division of tawhid into the components known to us today was not done by the Prophet nor his Companions. It was systematically defined as such in order to convey, as concisely as possible, the simple Unitarian belief of Islam.
This was necessary because as Islam quickly spread to the four corners of the world, new converts began to interpret the teachings of Islam in line with their own philosophical concepts of Allah and so confusion arose. Preconceived interpretations, all of which are blameworthy, were propagated by those who wanted to destroy Islam from the inside. There were three other such executions over the period of 26 years.
The later Umayyad Caliphs were relatively more corrupt and cared less about such religious issues. At the same time, the masses were also relatively less educated about their religion.
This proved to be a deadly combination. As the number of deviants increased through the liberation of various lands, apostates were no longer executed. Instead, Muslim scholars rose to execute the tide of heretics intellectually. Tawbjd, precisely defined, emerged out of this defense strategy. On tauhiyd ar-rububiyah 4 : All of mankind readily recognizes this aspect of tauhiyd except the most arrogant 5 because this belief in imprinted on our nature.
This is a belief in the uniqueness of Allah with respect to His actions. Even the pagan Arabs knew this. This category of tauhiyd necessitates the following beliefs: everything that happens in creation is by the decree and permission of Allah; sustenance and provision are from Allah alone; life and death are in His control only; all blessings and disasters come from Him only 6 ; guidance and misguidance is by the will of Allah alone; Allah alone has knowledge of the unseen; nobody has any rights over Allah unless He Himself has laid down such upon Himself; legislation and prescribing a way of life is the right of Allah alone, among other things.
On tauhiyd al-asma was-sifaat : This aspect of tauhiyd includes belief in only those attributes Allah has described Himself with in His Book and in only those attributes His Messenger has attributed to Him. We do not negate His actions like His establishment on His throne or His descending to the lowest heaven. Nor do we seek to explain the modality of such actions. This is because the modalities of such actions are unknown though the actions themselves are known.
Belief in them is obligatory and asking about the modality is innovation. The more one knows about Allah and His names and attributes, the more one will love, desire to please and have Allah pleased with him, fear, hope, and trust Allah. Hence, the correct understanding of the names and attributes of Allah is very important and beneficial. This is the reason that messengers were sent and books revealed This is the belief, recognition, and knowledge that Allah has the position of God over all His creation.
The necessary and proper consequence of the recognition that there is no god except Allah is that all worship will be reserved for Allah alone.
His beliefs will be whatever is proven in the Quran and Sunnah, he will be following the Messenger of Allah, his deeds and actions will be what Allah and His Messenger prescribed, and his character and manners will be an imitation of the Prophet. There are two actions of the heart that must be combined for the spirit of worship to be realized: love and submission.
And with the feeling of gratitude comes love. He is always anxious lest, because of his sins, Allah should withhold from him some of those favors or punish him in the hereafter.
Concept of Worship (ibadah) in Islam | Islamic Studies | CSS/PMS
He therefore fears Him and surrenders to Him and serving Allah with humility. The most important quality of the Holy Quran, as defined by itself, is that it is basic source of guidance for mankind in every walk of life. What is meant by the term Ibadah and to what kinds of works it is applied, what the Quran says about its application and how can we take up this word in our practical life?
These are important matters to be pondered over. Ibadah is generally defined as worship of Allah, performing prayers or observing formal obligations of Islam.
But in wider sense, it is interpreted as obedience of Allah or adhering to His Commands in daily life. It is a well-known fact that Islam gives a comprehensive code of life and demands from its followers to adopt this code in each and every aspect of their life and this Itaat-i-Ilahi is actually the meaning of Ibadah in its true sense.
The point is quite simple: Itaat-i-Ilahi or obedience to Allah can not be confined to one particular aspect of life.
As performance of salat, keeping fast, payment of Zakat and going for Hajj are obligatory for a believer, in the same way fulfilling the rights of others, kind and just treatment with fellow-beings and dealing honestly and truthfully in financial matters are also part of obligations of a Muslim, as Allah Taala has given clear directive to the Muslims for seriously taking care of all these matters.
It means a believer is required to obey Allah and His Prophet in all matters till the last moment of his life.
The Concept of Worship (Ibadah) in Islam
This is actually the gist of Ibadah which may also be interpreted in term of amal-i-salih. It includes performance of obligatory prayers as well as fulfilling the demands of Din and Shariah in social. With this wider concept of Ibadahit is painful to note that we have confined the term Ibadah to obligatory prayers and have narrowed down the concept of religiosity to the performance of Salah and Saum fasting.
We often forget that adherence to the Divine Commands in our behaviour with fellow-beings, following His directives in agricultural, commercial and professional works and showing honesty and truthfulness in financial transactions is also Ibadah and no less obligatory than the daily prayers. With this, we realize the purpose of our presence in this life, and realize whether our reality conforms to this purpose or not, i. Is it the five daily prayers, or is it the fasting of the month of Ramadan, or is it the prescribed Zakah, or the Hajj to the House of Allah? If Allah S. On the contrary, it only requires a relatively short time compared with the life of a human being. Then, what about the rest of human lifetime?!!
Many Muslims nowadays erroneously think that the meaning of ibadah worship is establishing the prescribed forms of worship acts only; they think if they establish them, then they have accomplished the goal that Allah S. Then they think that no harm will get to them in what they do. This, in reality, is wrong and a dangerous misunderstanding, because it is not the complete meaning that Allah S. We can pinpoint two main reasons:. It would have taken them the same amount of time that they used to consecrate for their worship of their idols.
Covering the belief to the prescribed forms of worship acts to all life activities, the individualistic and the societal with no exception. That was dictated by the nature of publishing and classifying which helped people to go back and look up the rules of interest without difficulty.
After this prelude, we realize why the first call to people in every divine message was: Submit to Allah alone. This is the straight path. What are its branches?
Is the whole deen included in it or not? The acts by heart include the love for Allah and His messenger, fear of Allah, asking Him for forgiveness, Having sincerity to Him alone in deen, being patient, thanking for His blessings, accepting His judgment, depending on Him, hoping for His mercy, fear from His punishment, and all things of this nature are from of ibadah worship.
In the light of this, there is no worshiper of Allah S. Similarly, they are not worshipers of Allah S. He who follows other than the legislation of Allah S. So, if they perform the forms of worship acts like prayer, fasting, zakah and hajj and accept the rulings about their private aspects and general aspects of life, or about the affairs of the society and the government from other than the legislation of Allah S.
Those who claim that they have the right to legislate whatever they want, whether they are commands, prohibitions, without the permission of Allah S. And those who accept this legislation from those people who legislate and follow their legislation, their system and their laws and abide by their commands and their prohibitions, then they have taken them as god and worshipped them along with Allah or without Allah S.Transcript of the Friday Sermon delivered by Dr.

It is important to note that a slave of someone else does not obey his master out of love. Such an attitude of willing self-abasement cannot justly be adopted towards anyone except Allah SWT. Fitrah is an Arabic word. It is the inborn natural disposition, which is inclined towards submission to One God. It is the pure and original state upon which God creates all human beings, and which is inclined towards that which is morally and spiritually pure, upright and wholesome.

Imam al-Qurtubi Rahimahullah said, "The root of 'ibadah is humility and submissiveness. The various duties that have been prescribed upon the people are called 'ibadaat acts of worshipsince what is required is that these acts of worship must be done with humility and submissiveness to Allah SWT. He urges:. Fikh is, in fact, a deontology the statement of the whole corpus of duties, of acts whether obligatory, forbidden or recommended, etc. Nevertheless, Islam cannot be reduced to fiqh and thus, ibadat is more than the enactment of the five pillars. Owing to Bousquet's definition it is not surprising that Rippin asserts that ritual in Islam centres on the five pillars.
Rippin considers the notion of the five pillars represents the epitome of the revealed law as enacted through ritual activity. The five actions embedded in the five pillars —the witness to faith syahadatprayer salatcharity zakatfasting sawmand pilgrimage hajj — being an integral part of the belief system and a part of the explication of theological statements of belief, are duties for which each individual is responsible, separate from general ethics and rules of interpersonal relationship.
Another writer also adopts a similar perspective. Actually, Rippin and Denny are not unaware of Bosquet's over-statement on the issue. Rippin's position becomes clearer when he also states that to the extent to which Muslim identity is expressed, ritual is not limited to the five pillars although the prominence of the grouping is obviously high.
Pak Soleh 44 yearsa thoughtful trader said:. It is true that such work as reciting the Qur'an, tahlil, tahmidvisits to tombs and the like are not ibadat in the narrower sense, but from the broader perspectives of Islam it is essentially ibadatdepending on our intention, whether we do it for Allah, for others or only for fun.
The Cirebonese, however, have a complex enunciation of how this ambiguity is clarified and understood, at least for themselves.
